Sunderkand is called the heart of Maharishi Valmiki’s Ramayana. In this, a detailed and lively description of Hanuman’s selflessness, power and surrender to Shriram has been given. Hanuman, after learning about Sita, assumes a giant form and takes a giant leap across the ocean to Lanka after defeating Sursa, the mother of serpents, and Simhika, sent by the gods.

After reaching Lanka, Hanuman searches for Sita and eventually Sita meets him in Ashoka Vatika.

In Ashoka Vatika, Sita is being coerced and threatened by Ravana and his demonic concubines into marrying Ravana. Hanuman gives Rama’s signet ring, given by Rama as a token of faith to Sita, and also offers to take Sita back to Rama. However, Sita refuses to go back with Hanuman, unwilling to allow herself to be rescued by anyone other than her husband Sri Rama, and tells Hanuman that Sri Rama will have to come in person to avenge the humiliation of her abduction.

After this Hanuman started wreaking havoc in Lanka by destroying trees and buildings and killed many of Ravana’s warriors. After this he allows himself to be captured and presented before Ravana. Hanuman gives a bold exhortation to Ravana to free Sita. But Ravana and no one present in the court listens to them. They all condemn him and his tail is set on fire. But he breaks free from his shackles and jumps from one roof to another and sets Ravana’s Lanka on fire. After this, he takes a huge jump back from the island, comes back to his team and returns to Shri Ram.
